Since there's a new era of discs coming rapidly towards us I think it's time to make a post about it.

BluRay already has a region set. But most studios still release their disc as region free.

Studios from the dark side :aaa:
FOX
SONY
LIONSGATE
BUENA VISTA
DISNEY

HD-DVD is still not region coded

Sites
This site shows a lot of movies and if they are locked or not

I'm still waiting for the LG BD/HD-DVD player to lower its price. It's still between 700-800 bucks
In the meantime I might buy a BluRay player to enjoy my movies.

Well this is interesting news.

It seems that Warner, last month, has stated as of june 2008 they wont be putting movies on HD-DVD anymore. It will be Blu Ray only for them.
If you google for it you will see various sites backing this up.

There's also talk that this is the breakthrough most people have been waiting for since Warner is one of the largest, if not the largest, name in movies.
If Paramount follows then HD-DVD will be pretty much dead (so it is said... not my words)

I found an article saying Paramount is following, but I think it's a rumour and it probably is.
Most news I could find is from august 2007 saying Paramount will be going HD-DVD only
Even though the HD-DVD sales in 2006 and 2007 were less than the Blu Ray

More crap to read

n Europe Blu Ray is far more popular than HD-DVD
Today in the shop there was like 6-7 lines of Blu Ray titles compared to 2 lines of HD-DVD titles

Lots to read, but for those of you that are still can't make up their minds... wait another year :)

Looks like it's the final nail in the coffin for HD:

Quote:
TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp is planning to stop production of equipment compatible with the HD DVD format for high-definition video, allowing the competing Blu-Ray camp a free run, public broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday.

Toshiba is expected to suffer losses amounting to tens of billions of yen (hundreds of millions of dollars) to scrap production of HD DVD players and recorders and other steps to exit the business, Japan's NHK said on its website.

No one at Toshiba could be reached for comment.

The format war between the Toshiba-backed HD DVD and Sony Corp's Blu-Ray, often compared to the Betamax-VHS battle in the 1980s, has slowed the development of what is expected to be a multibillion dollar high-definition DVD industry.

Toshiba was dealt a blow on Friday when Wal-Mart Stores Inc said it would abandon the HD DVD format, becoming the latest in a series of top retailers and movie studios to rally behind Blu-ray technology for high definition DVDs.

Toshiba plans to continue selling HD DVD equipment at stores for the time being but will not put resources into developing new devices, NHK said.

Full story.

I hope there's some studio that will release crappy movies on Blu Ray.

Does anyone know of a site that has Blu Ray movies that have a budget <10 million dollar and have an IMDB rating <5.0 :D
