Oh and I'll especially look into the I, and B xvid user defined settings you suggested.
BTW you have chroma enabled in there? Actually what did you enable?
I have only Chroma optimizer or whatever it's called checked.
That's the deafault I think

Ok people how can i cut the last ~10 seconds from the rip that appear to be nothing else but black, black and black. Lux already pointed me out to dgIndex. But where/how in dgIndex cani do this?

Sure no hurries! I gotta go in a couple of minutes so i'll check it later.
Oh yeah and what about ac3? I presume this is something i gotta check in GK or do i have to do it already in DGindex --> Output methods --> Demux All Tracks or Disable?
Edit:
About the cutting:
Is that maybe to be done with the 'brackets' [ ] so in the bar there a highlighted area upto the point where it goes black?

Load the vobs in dgIndex as usual....
See the 2 start and end thingies? let's say I want the shit to end where the marker is now... I click the right (set end) thing..
And I remove it. Simple as that. Just leave the start as it is, find the shit at the end, and make it disappear
For AC3, yeah demux all tracks. That should be the deafault setting anyway me thinks...
In gknot under resolution tab...
just select the AC3 track that you want to use, and select AC3 in the audio1 setting.

Btw Pure, you can cut out let's say 5-10 minutes of a movie that way, and experiment with that. So once you get things right like that, just use the same settings on the complete encode

I think I made the first step on solving my problem.
Actually I din't re-install XviD before, but for some reason I thought I did
I was installing the CCCP codec pack the other day and I think it fucked with my previous XviD.
Anyway, the comptest is finally giving me right results. Showing for example values over 100% for 1/3 DVD of a hour 26min movie.
Now to set it to encode

Let's all learn some crap... Anyway, Belly of the Beast is encoding currently. Here are 3 screens from avisynth DVD source, no filters applied:
And a grainy dark one to give the encoder some shit to chew on:
The encoding settings are... Packed Bitstream OFF. Adaptive Quant ON. Max b-vops 2. Jawor 2cd.
In USER DEFINED. Chroma Motion On, Trellis ON. Basically as default... And I used grInd's setting
Now let's see how it will turn out. I got the bitrate and the eternal power of Thor and Odin, so I want this shit to look as good as the source.

You can use the trim function in avs too. That way the bitrate is calcualted for the total file size of the whole movie, and you dont gotta do the math yourself.
BUT you still get out-of-size rips, but it will be closer to the actual product.
Those Xvid Settings are good for AFR sized rips. I think you should leave packed bitstreamn though right? Gotta look into its usefulness, but I think it helps the stability of the encode.

Spud and Rogue turn Packed Bitstream off and their rips look smashing. I use adaptive quantatization and also turn it off.. I remember Spud saying bad things about Packed or something...
Might wanna try the other way around again with Belly of the Beast so I see how it turns out.
The current one is crap. Gonna post comparison screens.

Making a new try with Boa vs. Python. 1/6 size. I've put the resolution at 640x352 (much like Octopus 2 ), with Jawor 1cd. Let's see how it will poop out

Wow that rip looks better than the source! A little darker but the color looks better, brings out ht edetail of his fat face!

I actually don't know what's changing the colors
I made another one with Chroma motion disabled and still the same
Hmmm I'll enable both chroma motion AND chroma optimizer and make another run

Thanks bro. I turn PB off because I got some bitching about SA compatibility.
Your comparison shots look great. Can you by any chance post the script?
As a rule of thumb my ripping philosphy is 'less is more'. I try to avoid extensive filtering to avoid problems like this:
You have a grainy source and use a degrainig filter. The result looks too smooth/blurred so you sharpen. Sharpening causes halos so you need a dehalo filter... you get the idea.
In cases like that I try to find just the right amount of degrainig that lets me lose most of the grain and still keep enough details.
Of course sharpness/blurriness is a matter of taste and (what most people forget) your hardware. Are you watching it via TV-out on a regular TV? A plasma (sharper image!)? Or even a monitor?
I rarely touch quantizer settings btw.
Oh, and this is a great thread (just found it).

Awesome you joined in this thread Rogue

BTW, I always wondered what's the big deal with stances on Qpel. I know about the incompatibility with players.
I never used it. But if it helps out the rip to look better, I don't see why not. I read it has a nice sharpening like effect at higher bitrates.
Thoughts please

Agreed, awesome of Rogue to join in!
Undot is a grain filter. Its fast and good enough to use frequently. It has no parameters, and the filter RemoveGrain's mode=1 is equal to Undot. I use Undot mostly, because I too try to steer away from too many filters. Undot and Convo3d get rid of most noise. They might not get the ultimate results, but they are easy and fast enough for my tastes. Anyway GK enables Undot by default, though AutoGK uses Removegrain by default.
