64bits Windows?
I'm planing to upgrade one of my PCs to a 64bits Windows version. I don't want Vista so the options are XP or Server 2003. Any tips?
So far the only thing that I know is that you must copy the 32bits DLLs to: \WINDOWS\SysWOW64\

Re: 64bits Windows?
Meh, I think I'll wait another year. There is no stable 64bits version of FFDShow, no 64bits version of CoreAVC, only few 64bits avisynth filters. Maybe in 1 or 2 years.

Re: 64bits Windows?
You got that right. I remember I wanted to be one of the first of my friends to have a 64bit windows (XP) Man that sucked. Absolutely nothing worked and 90% of the stuff I had to run in 32 bit emulation.

So far the only thing that I know is that you must copy the 32bits DLLs to: \WINDOWS\SysWOW64\ then, download windows 7 x64 RTM,best OS ever I'm using it since the pre-beta version and it works great, much faster then vista and much more user friendly then XP.

Re: 64bits Windows?
question is, why do you want to upgrade?
do you know the benefits (if any) with a 64bit OS?
its all about the software that runs in 64bits and the benefits 'you' might receive..
plus, you will runs 90% of all your software in 32bit anyway.
my completely biased and awesome conclusion;
get Linux.

do you know the benefits (if any) with a 64bit OS? At work the CPU intensive work is done by servers, some 64bits, some linux, some windows, etc. At home the most CPU intensive work that I do is encoding. The 64bits version of x264 is 10 to 15% faster than the 32bits version on the same CPU. That means that a 24hours encode could be done in ~20.5. A 3.5 hours faster encode is worth the effort. Why Windows and not Linux? All the nice encoding filters are for Windows. Some run in Linux via Wine, but if you add some multithreading and things don't work under Linux. The next CPU intensive thing is videoplayback. A juicy 1080p encode puts a decent CPU to its knees. Why not Linux? CoreAVC and better yet CoreAVC + CUDA still outperforms anything on Linux. But... there is no 64bits version of CoreAVC and there are only few 64bits AviSynth filters.

Re: 64bits Windows?
I heard about the CoreAVC/Linux project, but it's at a very early stage. Same goes for H264/VC1 CUDA decoding. That's why I said that there are "still" no Linux alternatives.
Some Avisynth and some avisynth filters run under Linux, but I don't want some, I want the filters that I use and multithreaded! That doesn't work under Linux yet.

And btw,I use KMPlayer+CoreAVC+CUDA+AC3 Filter on x64 windows 7 and everything works perfectly.

Re: 64bits Windows?
You still don't get it! Eat this first: Now a short explanation. 32bits apps can't comunicate directly with 64bits apps. If you want to get the extra 10-15% speed you could get from the 64bits version of x264 (available here) then every program involved in the encoding process needs to be 64bits. 64bits Avisynth, 64bits Avisynth filters and 64bits x264 or Xvid. There is an alpha 64bits version of Avisynth and just some very very few 64bits filters, so all the 64bits encoding chain breaks at that point. Maybe doing a lossless pass first, but all the "quick" encodes would be slower because the extra pass.
