Post Before encoding an animation
Hoi all, :)

I'll start encoding my first animation. It's "Dumbo 1941 1080p Blu-ray EUR AVC DTS-HD MA 7.1". But before I start I think the standard x264 encoding options differs when the movie is an animation. What should I change in command line before I start encoding.(I'm using gx's insane profile) Any help will be appreciated. :)

For "regular" animation there are different options, but I dunno about Dumbo. It probably has lots of grain?

Anyway: a bit lower AQ, a bit lower PsyRDO and a bit higher Deblock would be a good start. Bframes improve compressibility quite a lot on animation, so you could use some more.

Should this settings do the job?

"C:\x264_r1416\x264.exe" --profile high --pass 1 --bframes 8 --b-adapt 2 --direct auto --no-fast-pskip --me umh --merange 24 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,i8x8 --rc-lookahead 80 --aq-mode 1 --ref 5 --subme 10 --aq-strength 0.7 --no-dct-decimate --deblock -3:-3 --psy-rd 1.2:0.25 --weightp 2 --b-pyramid normal --trellis 2 --bitrate 1172 --stats "E:\Encode\dumbo.stats" --level 4.1 --output NUL "G:\Movie\Bluray\Dumbo 1941 1080p Blu-ray EUR AVC DTS-HD MA 7.1\BDMV\STREAM\dumbo.avs" --qcomp 0.7 --slow-firstpass

And one question, it says;

--ref 5
Recommendation: Around 4-6. Each increase has a reduced benefit and constant speed loss. Very large numbers of refs are normally not very useful, but even up to 16 can be helpful for animated content, video game capture, CGI, and other similar content.

Should I raise this value to 16 considering i'm encoding an animation? and which options should i tweak if i'm not happy with the encode?

Between I didn't notice too much grain in movie and thanks a bunch :cheer:
