Post Good FTP server software
I've been a user of Serv-u for a while now and I installed 9.2.0.X and even though it was cracked I couldn't get it online anymore.
Neither could 9.4.0.X, cracks, keygens. No luck.

so I tried this free ftp server program called Cerberus.
It has a great interface. It's easy to use. It does NOT start as a service, which sucks, but the main problem is speed. It wont go higher than 100mbit. Once and a while it tops 150mbit. I've a 1Gbit LAN and I was expecting it to do at least 500-600mbit/s

Can anyone point me out to a good version of serv-u or another product that is FAST and starts during bootup as a service.

I haven't used Serv-U since I installed Filezilla so you could try that one out.

I tried filezilla. It didn't make sense

I installed the server version and it said it had to connect to a server. Which one would that be?

EDIT: I also installed FireFTP, nice plugin, but has problems. max filesize is 4GB and the speed is around 170mbit.

:spank:

And download the server, not the client!

Can't help you out there, only used the client so far.
Are you sure you installed the server one? I dunno why you wouls need to connect to a server as a server. That port is not weird IMO, I'm using ports way higher in number if thats what you find strange.

Post Re: Good FTP server software
installed the server, played stupid and gave it all the defaults
127.0.0.1 and port 14147
it connects (to itself?!?)

But I still can't connect to it
do I need to use the filezilla client to connect to filezilla server or can I use another ftp client?

I don't know mate, like I said I never used the server version.
But then again I would find it very strange if another ftp client isn't allowed to connect to the FileZilla server. Programming wise I mean by that ;)

Edit:
Maybe someone here used the server version. Do they have a support section or a forum perhaps?

Filezilla Server for dummies:

1) Download the server
Image

2) Install the program
Image

Image

Image

3) Choose port 21, that's the port used by regular FTP Servers
Image

4) Now the program is running. The server is listening @ port 21 and the admin interface is listening @ 1089
Image

5) Log into the server admin interface on port 1089
Image

6) Oh, and it's already running as service
Image

All this should take you less than 2 minutes. :ere:

Well on the picture that's the admin port actually.
Filezilla determines the ftp port on 21 by default

Also you forgot to post one screenshot for the dummies manual.

WTF is it with that ip 127.0.0.1, if I use my internal ip address it wont even start, so I kept it on 127.0.0.1.
But when I want to connect to 127.0.0.1 with my client it wont work. Neither does my internal ip.

The problem is not installing and running fileserver, it's connecting to it.

I used port 10000 this time as the admin server port
port 21 is my ftp port

So basicly there's 4 possibilities
127.0.0.1:21
127.0.0.1:10000
192.168.178.99:21
192.168.178.99:10000

None work, not even anonymously
Do I need to add the admin server port as well in my router?

If you want to admin (users, folders, permissions) just locally, then no. If you want to admin your FTP server from a remote location, then yes.

Post Re: Good FTP server software
Well I turned off the firewall (I thought the firewall would not matter in a LAN), removed FileZilla and all of the registry settings and reinstalled it and run it. I finally could connect, but the speed was very bad. Around 130mbit/s. When I turned the firewall on it didn't connect at all. Even after allowing it through the firewall

I removed it again. Started fiddling with another version of serv-u and serv-u seems to work WITH the firewall on and 600-700mbit/s :)

I guess I've to wait and see after 30 days if it's still running as I've little faith in the keygen that came with it.

so until next month for more ftp fun with El Mariachi

Go to General Settings -> Miscellaneous and increase the buffer sizes. A bellow average machine shouldn't have problems maxing out a Gigabit Ethernet connection.
