Ripping/encoding/releasing Q & A Prt. III:

I wanted to start a thread for benefit of reference, that users may find useful. There are a few standards going around p2p these days, but a site like this (that works with a certain type of entertainment) can use all the help it can get to build up solid collections of, in this case, bad films.

So many fans out there own/possess really great bad films on VHS/DVD, but have no idea how to get things out and up. For one thing, the lack of Chuck Norris movies on p2p is a travesty.

So many some of the experienced members here can post some tips/tricks/suggestions/standards found to be "proper". I have many 2 cents of my own to give, to be sure, and my own standards. I feel that sometimes, 'scene rips' are a major let down, as these peeps should know better.

Lets discuss some basics, and I'll add to this first post as the plot unfolds. Okay? Go!

You have to do the prefiltering on your own. I'll post some suggestions later.

All right guys. I need your help.

There's an old movie that I snatched from mule after over a 100 days. The problem is that it's encoded @ 25 FPS. So what I see is images progressing in a flickered manner. Should I re-encode the file to 23.976 FPS? If so, then how?

Thanks! :huge:

after crop i have 1440x1080

so to make a 720p rip will be 1280/1.33= 962 the resolution will be 1280x962 ins?t that so ??

No, that would be larger than 720p ;)

720p is defined by a max resolution of 1280x720. Since your video is 4:3, then the corresponding 720p resolution would be: 960x720 :cheer:

Post Re: Ripping/encoding/releasing Q & A Prt. III
For non-anamorphic 720p it's 1280x720 minus cropping. So the max horizontal resolution can't be bigger than 1280 and the max vertical resolution can't be bigger than 720.

.5625 x Width = p
Because all Blu-rays are transferred in 16:9

(FS) Height = p

Is there a name for the effect on the red shirt?

Image

I found out through trial and error of using different filters that SmoothUV cleans it up, but without knowing what that effect is called I can't search for any more filtering ideas...

yeah looks interlaced, but then again probably not as the rest of the pic looks fine.
also it goes vertical instead of horizontal
almost looks like an overlapping next/previous frame joint as 1 frame

It's called a lame chroma upsampling. Blame your video renderer and/or drivers and/or windows :clown:

The colorspace of encodes, DVDs and Blurays is YV12, but our monitors are RGB. The colorspace must be upscaled for playback and the piece of software or hardware doing this on your computer does it wrong. It becomes visible when watching 100% saturated colors.

Let AviSynth do the upscale and add ConvertRGB() to your script and watch that frame. But don't forget to remove ConvertRGB() before encoding!

For playback try for example this: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228

Read more here:
http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Sampling
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8 ... -2001.html
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=106111

The last doom9 thread had a comparison between different renderers / video cards / drivers, but those screenshots seem to be dead.

Thanks elguaxo :cheer:

So it's a playback thing rather than something that will effect the encode?

Anyway, I'm off to have a look through those links now... Hope they don't get too technical! :lol:

I noticed ConvertToRGB() while I was reading through those threads, but it doesn't say what happens when you add it to the script. I presume nothing is a good thing, right?

...And I uploaded a sample to go with my original post but forgot to include it - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fi ... 8354887529

For the same source I'm using selectevery(5,0,1,2,4) for the pulldown, but the pattern changes to selectevery(5,0,1,3,4). It seems to work ok, but is this the right way to apply the change in the pattern?

Code:
a=selectevery(5,0,1,2,4).trim(0,32701)
b=selectevery(5,0,1,3,4).trim(32702,128085)
c=(a+b)
c.

As I said earlier encodes, DVDs and Blurays are in YV12, while our monitors are RGB. When you preview a script some codec (most of the times it's one included with Xvid) upscales the YV12 colorspace to RGB and if it sucks, you'll see the blocks around 100% saturated colors like in your case.

Adding ConvertToRGB() to the script will force AviSynth to do the chorma upsampling job. AviSynth does it right and you won't see those blocks. But ConvertToRGB() should be used only for previewing and not for encoding. If you use it for encoding the YV12 colorspace of the DVD (or Bluray) will get upscaled to RGB and then the codec will downscale it again to YV12 (a lossy process) -> 2 unnecessary colorspace conversions that will change something that shouldn't be touched.

For playback madVR or the Haali renderer don't show this problem. I'm sure there are many other combinations that work, but those are the renderers I use.

Tomorrow I'll take a look at your sample. :cheer:

Alright, guys, I have decided to rip A Breakfast at Tiffany's. The only problem is I do not know where I need to start from. An year back I ripped Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and it looked O.K. But now I think the time has arrived to encode DVDs a la Elguaxo style! You know: x264, 'Muxed-in' subtitles and all. :!

No, seriously, I am a total n00b when it comes to ripping, much less when it comes to encoding them in x264. But, hey, isn't SBiG exactly the place where a dumb-ass has a liberty of posting such things in front of seasoned rippers? :crazy2:

Thanks and I am ready, so bring it on!! :cum: :probe:

You have to do the prefiltering on your own. I'll post some suggestions later.

Some prefiltering for Motion Compensated denosing:

MinBlur(2).FluxSmoothT() #fast
MedianBlur(2,2,2).FluxSmoothT() #fast and strong
FFT3Dfilter(sigma=sigma*0.8,sigma2=sigma*0.6,sigma3=sigma*0.4,sigma4=sigma*0.2) #general purpose, aprox. the default used by TemporalDegrain and MCTemporalDenoise.
http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1 ... stcount=33 low-frequency stabilizer, also used by TemporalDegrain.
