I need a recomendation for a stabile subtitling propgram. I used to work with Subtitle Workshop, and it was really good for me, but when I started it this morning I found out that it suddenly crashes when I press Alt+Tab Any experience?

first of all,what do you need the prog for? do you want to extract subs from films,or do you want to make em from scratch?

Making them from scratch. Watching video in some sort of a preview screen and typing subtitles at desired positions.

You need to install Aegisub,run the film & script through it & start syncing each line to the audio/video. This is called timing, I've been a timer for an animegroup for some time now & I can tell you this: if you need to time an entire film,you're in for a long time. I usually time a 24 min ep in 4 to 6 hours so do the math...

you can also get a newer version of Aegisub on their site (it's free) but this one is more stable than the newer releases

tips: -you need a lead in /out of about 5/100/sec on each sub: this means the subs will start/stop a bit earlier than the audio for that line

-if you want to do a good job,it'll take some time,coz there's a rule that subs can never run in the next scene (you'll have to frameskip your way through the film to sync em right)

you can also use Sabbu (also free) I used that a lot in the past; it's a bit more usrefriendly,but it's also more unstable & it tends to crash every now & then (no prob here if you remember to save every now & then )

I got no image of it, since the project is discontinued, but it works very good

Hehe, I think I'll stick with Subtitle Workshop until I finish this Partisan Squadron subs. I'm pressing Crtl+S after every line I enter, so I don't loose anything if the fucker crashes Thanks for the links, I'll try these out for sure

i cant get sabbu to load so.... and need to make the fuckin subs for CSI Lukovo

I've been working with aegisub for a few months now, and I highly recommend it over sabbu.
Sabbu tends to crash when you load subs+video+audio & you try to run the whole thing to preview

Aegisub is easier to handle & way more stable (get version 1.10 free from their site)

best way to 'make' subs in my experience, is to type out the script in notepad first (save as txt)

and then simply load the txt into Aegisub, together with your movie.
Then it's just a matter of adjusting the subs to the audio (timing)

Also, Aegisub lets you drag subs all over the screen (handy for the movie title & stuff), plus it's typesetting abilities are among the best I know.

This is what I'm working on atm, see the purple english title & the bluegreenish subs, I typesetted & dragged that one.Possibilities are almost limitless

Does it have an ability to simply enter mark in/out for where you want the subititle to be?

yes, its one of the buttons on top, next to the "100%"

I don't think it supports .mov ( no subtitlingsoftw does that as far as I know, what you do in that case, is rip the audio from the mov, & save it as wav/mp3.

open aegisub, load script, open audio, and time the script on the audio (that's how I always did it with Sabbu, coz it didn't like audio & video combined)

besides, normally, you never time subs to video anyway, you need audio to know when there is spoken

It's in .mov cause it's easiest to export as a quicktime reference file, only a few kb's big, that link to all the media. So then I can load it in progs for converting to DVD and shit
