Pale Moon Is a Faster Firefox Clone for Windows

Quote:
Windows: If you're a devotee of Firefox's add-ons and features but would like just a tad more operation speed, Pale Moon might be perfect, at least for a trial run. The custom and extension-compatible Firefox build seems just a bit snappier.

It's a relative measurement, of course, to note that Pale Moon, built and compiled specifically for Windows operation, tests out 25 percent ahead of Firefox in certain SunSpider rendering and scripting tests. As we've noted in our browser speed tests, browser testing suites can be subjective, and don't always translate to real-world experience. Then again, using Pale Moon for the better part of a morning, I could guess at feeling pages like Gawker.com and Slashdot loading a tad faster than in Firefox, which I kept open for side-by-side testing. Pale Moon should work with most of your extensions, too, and if you install it in a non-portable fashion, it picks up your existing Firefox profile and runs with it.

I just tried the portable version. I was able to import my Firefox profile and all the addons work fine. The only thing that's a tiny bit different is its behavior when opening new links/tabs, so I downloaded this extra addon to tweak it to my liking. Recommended :cheer:

edit: I like this addon better for handling the tabs.

The Font Thing
The Font Thing Webpage

Image

The Font Thing is a freeware program for managing TrueType fonts in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 (and also works on Win7).

With The Font Thing you can:
    * Browse installed and uninstalled fonts
    * Browse fonts in subfolders as a single combined list
    * View sample text and individual characters in your choice of colours
    * Change sample text "on the fly" or easily switch between your own standard text samples
    * View detailed font information
    * Print font samples
    * Associate notes with fonts
    * Install or uninstall any number of fonts at once
    * Load (and unload) any number of fonts for temporary use
    * Copy or delete any number of font files at once
    * Rename font files to avoid file name conflicts
    * Filter fonts according to their type
    * Group fonts into collections for easier management
    * Use multiple font windows simultaneously for easy font comparison and management.

For Win7 64bit users:
Go to the website's download page at LINK and download the non-installer, the second version labeled as Zipped EXE and help files (483K). The installer-package version is apparently not compatible with Windows 7.

Auslogics Disk Defrag (Disk Defragmenter)

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a must-have free PC maintenance tool that was designed to cure system sluggishness and prevent crashes caused by disk fragmentation. Windows already comes with its own disk-defragmenter but Auslogics Disk Defrag is considerably faster and much more efficient.

It?s extremely simple to use, does not require any analysis phase and is faster than most of the other disk defragmentation software.

While there are several other free disk defragmenters, Auslogics seems to be the defragmenter of choice according to the poll results on MakeUseOf, Lifehacker and mega tech sites like CNET.

Interesting... I think the only advantage over Launchy is that you can also minimize, maximize and close programs, although I already use ALT-F4 for closing apps via keyboard. I'll give it a try.

GFI Backup

"It's the top recommendation for average users, with an easy to use backup scheduler and restore function (that restores complete archives or individual files). It also backups files even if they are in use and supports numerous backup locations (including LAN and FTP). You will find GFI similar to Titan Backup, with some nice extras."

See here for related online apps and services. Online backup services allow you to share your data, access it when traveling, or archive it in yet another extra storage location.

Backup software like GFI has wizards and step by step guides to make the process painless, giving you confidence that it will continue to work behind the scenes to protect your data. They include support for scheduling and backing up to local and online storage locations, verification of backup archives, and easy to use restore functions.

Something that could run flawlessly without so much as a momentary hiccup. Something that would prove to be a monumental breakthrough in terms of music discovery.

Win7DSFilterTweaker

Image

Quote:
Win7DSFilterTweaker tool allows you to configure your preferred DirectShow filters with just a few mouse clicks. It is quick, easy, and changes can always be undone. Windows 7 uses its own DirectShow filters for decoding several audio and video formats. Using third party filters instead of the native filters is not possible without making changes to the Windows Registry. If you for example prefer to use ffdshow or CoreAVC for decoding H.264 video then you can do so by using this tool. This tool is particularly useful for the Microsoft players, such as Windows Media Player and Media Center. Certain advanced third party players, such as Media Player Classic, are already capable of using third party filters without using this tool.
