Post Hub or Switch
I hear different stories. Both from people that think that know shit and people that DO know shit.

My modem reached its 4 port limit. Which sucks. I need a 5th computer hooked up.
I've two on the second floor, so there's where I want my hub or switch.

I want to hear the facts.
I can look for the facts, but like I said, there's different talk about each device being better or worse.

I trust you guys :!

AFAIK it all depends on the amount of traffic data you're expecting on your network.
For a HUB it's a known problem that if more then 2 computer will try to transmit data at the same time you've got a prob. In most cases the comp will wait a certain time before it tries again. if these kind off collisions occur very often you can get some network problems. If you expect to have a lot of data traffic between all five computer i would go for a switch. This because a switch only makes a connection with the computer you want to connect to. Thsi way you can use comp 1 to tansmit a movie to comp 2 and simultaniously use comp 3 to send some dirty pictures to comp 4. And again this is as far as i know ;)

Switch. But if you have only 5 computers you won't notice the difference.

Quote:
Hub:
Hubs repeat everything they receive and can be used to extend the network. However, this can result in a lot of unnecessary traffic being sent to all devices on the network. Hubs pass on traffic to the network regardless of the intended destination; the PCs to which the packets are sent use the address information in each packet to work out which packets are meant for them. In a small network repeating is not a problem but for a larger, more heavily used network, another piece of networking equipment (such as a switch) may be required to help reduce the amount of unnecessary traffic being generated.

Quote:
Switch:
Switches control the flow of network traffic based on the address information in each packet. A switch learns which devices are connected to its ports (by monitoring the packets it receives), and then forwards on packets to the appropriate port only. This allows simultaneous communication across the switch, improving bandwidth.

This switching operation reduces the amount of unnecessary traffic that would have occurred if the same information had been sent from every port (as with a hub).

Under some circumstances large networks need both.

Most likely I will be copying shit I downloaded on the "server" to the movie comp (new computer)

The download computer is also the one that will be behind the hub/switch and 24/7 on download.

So a switch is probably the best option then since, if I read correctly, I will probably copy 10Gb from "server" to "movie computer"

1. download computer
2. movie computer
3. server
4. penis
5. anus

If the server is copying 10GB to the movie computer, the download computer is copying 10GB to penis, penis is copying 20GB to anus and all this happens at full speed at the same time, then you will notice the difference between a switch and hub. I guess it won't happen too often. But since switches are cheap, go for a switch.

In a large network sometimes you want to 'share' all network packets between a proxy, mailserver, 'evil packet sniffer based content filter' and 'evil packet snifer based spam filter'. In that case you put all these PCs under a hub.

So if i get it right if you want for instance email access on all comp's you need to put them under a hub?

No, a switch is fine.

But if you have some kind of software that 'spies' and/or blocks network traffic, then it needs to be placed somewhere where it can see everything. For example under the same 'hub' used by the proxy and/or mailserver.

The top floor computers will be the ones doing all the fucking.

The toilet is exactly like that. And picture of Lux is there for masturbating purposes.
