Post W-LAN router f*cking around
What W-LAN routers are you guys using and how satisfied are you with them?

I formerly had a D-LINK DI-624

Worked great for 3 years, then it kept restarting itself every 10 minutes or so. Landed in the trash bin.

Now I have Buffalo Nfiniti WZR2 G300n

Problems:

  • W-LAN connections drop every now and then (about 2 times a week). Needs hard reset to fix it.
  • Internet connection is lagging (dropping out for several milliseconds) now. It was fine for 2 years. Now it started this strange lags that result in games disconnecting from the server.

Any suggestions for a new router? (It needs to have W-LAN and a few RJ-45 jacks)

I bought a Linksys WTRG54GS 7 years ago and it has been working 24/7 ever since and it's just great. Right now I'm using it with the Tomato Firmware.

Over the years I've recommended it to many friends and it has been great for them too. But Linksys started to produce a lot of crappy routers so you really need to search a bit to know you are getting a good one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g (right now the only good model of the WRT54G family is the WRT54GL)

I'm planing to upgrade to an N capable router so I've been searching for a while. I think I'll get the WRT160NL (the L at the end is important, other models are crap). I don't have it yet, so I don't have a first hand experience, but it's what I'm planning to buy.

I'm also connected to the W-LAN router using a cable. But the lag is still there. I tested it with several PCs with and without cable/wireless conection. It all had the same problem, so it must be the router causing this.

The WRT160NL does have a lot of negative reviews and since I don't need a USB NAS feature, I'll try the WRT54NL.

Thanks for your help guys. :cheer:

Any suggestions for a robust W-LAN USB stick?

I have one from netgear and one from Zyxel.
Netgear one is causing a lot of trouble with Windows XP (Windows not detecting it several times, you have to unplug, ... terrible)
Zyxel works great with Linux, but the Windows application is crashing on start-up. Terrible.

You mean the WRT54GL? It's a great piece of hardware. And I highly recommend you the Tomato Firmware for that router!

The small ones have been crap for me. The only W-LAN USB adapters I can recommend are these: viewtopic.php?p=165067#p165067 They work great under various flavors of Linux, XP and 7. :cheer:

Yes, I meant the WRT54GL.

I'll check the ALFA AWUS036H out. Thanks for all the nice tips. :cheer:

How to use router if need to operate wired desktop, wireless laptop and wifi phone on mac bound wan connection? I submitted my linksys router mac address (found on the back of router) to my wan operator (who provides mac based connection) but my wireless laptop and wifi phone did not connect. How to use router to connect wired desktop, wireless laptop and wifi phone using mac bound wan connection?

I'm not sure what we use but I know it's a cheap $30 one and works great so far.
