Post How do you organize movies on your harddisk?
My harddisk is one big mess, there's movies floating everywhere and I can't find jack shit. It's really getting on my nerves and now I'm looking for a proper way to organize my movie collection.

I was wondering how you guys organize your movie collection (by genre, year, quality etc.)?

I use a program called 'WhereIsIt'. I alllows you to index the content of HDDs and save catalogs, which can be searched in the software.

I dump all movies in folders. Serious flicks in /Movies, all else in /Bad Taste. There I organise it in genres, like /Zombies or /Scifi. I have an Excel file holding all titles in my collection.

You can view it here, although that version is a bit outdated: Filmcollection.xls

Thanks for the tips. I'm now using where is it? and it gives me a great overview of the different hard disks I use and the movies that are on them. I can acces my files much faster now.

Now comes the hard part. I'm looking for a way to categorize my movies. First I thought of using subgenre folders within the genre folders like: blaxploitation, biker movies, giallo etc. This works for some films but not all movies are that easy to categorize and there are too many subgenres.
How do you guys categorize your movies folder wise?

Btw I like your way of categorizing movies Slayer and that's a great list of movies! :ere:

I don't sort by genre, I just have categores like 'Movies', 'Series', 'Documentaries' and so on coresponding to HDDs (used to be DVD-Rs).
For example I'll have HDD_01 with one big folder Movies (1) or something like that. :) Once that folder/HDD is full, I'll start a folder Movies (2) on the next new HDD. So I could end up with

HDD_15 - Movies (2)

and so on...

Since I normally search by title and don't browse by genre, that works fine for me. :)

I have 3 external drives: movies, series & anime. Obviously the latter 2 each have their folders, but the movies are simply A-Z.
I always rename em properly when downloaded so they always sort themselves automatically

eg:

The.Humanoid.1979.DVDRip.XviD.AC3-Axxo

and when it is a movie series like star wars, trek, james bond, etc I just put that in front of the title. Naschy movies are also tagged in this way, coz I own way to much of his shit :D

looks like this:

Paul.Naschy.El.Jorobado.De.La.Morgue-The.Hunchback.Of.The.Morgue.1973.DVDRIP.x264.AC3.Triple.Audio-CG

or

Paul.Naschy.La.Venganza.De.La.Momia-Vengeance.Of.The.Mummy.1973.DVDRip.H264.AC3.Spa.Eng.fandub.by.pinhead0303.Eng.Sub-CG

if they have multiple audiostreams & subs.

Works like a charm, I can find anything at any time

Not so hard, for those movies that you can't categorize, just dump 'em in a folder named Other or Uncategorized or whatever :D That's how I do it :)

Same here.

I have:
- Anthology
- Demonic / Possessed
- Exploitation
- Ghost / Haunted
- Monsters
- Other
- Satanic / Witches
- Scifi / Fantasy
- Slashers
- Vampires
- Zombies

This only goes for movies I still have to watch, so I can easily pick the subgenre I want to see at that moment. When seen, they all go into /Bad Taste and have their own folder so they are alphabetized automatically.

In the collection Excel file the categories are much cruder as you can see.
