I guess it depends on the HDD you put in it
I put in some Seagate Maxtor inside and no noticable noise as I could hear

Well I got this
Has both Firewire and USB connections. Then I bought an IDE hdd, in my case a Seagate Maxtor 320gb and put it inside. Connected to my computer, formatted it and walla. So basically the box is the only catch It's called Icy Box, but I bet you have similiar other brands over at yours
