External disk life?
hey guys I am on a hunt to find the best way to back my stuff up. I am thinking of getting a 500 gig western digital external disk. I would like to know how long the bugger will last? Is it anything like the life of dvds? It has a fan, I will use it just about all day because my music will be on it. Most of the time it will be used to steal friends shit and load completed emule movies on it

Well first a tip
DON'T BUY THIS SHIT!!! I have th 500gb version and it's terrible. Very slow transfer with firewire, can't be manually shut down etc. Horse crap!
You're better off with a Seagate 320gb external

X-mas is gone
But I'm thinking of getting an external drive myself. The duration of the drives in general can be very different. I still have harddrives from 89-95 that work.
Maybe if you write/read 24/7 the life is drained out and you can only use it for a few years. I've no idea.

I got me a Toshiba External HDD. Works great, low noise, pretty good speeds and no problems playing video files straight from it. Been reading about brackets for some time now and i more and more wanna get me some. In fact i'm more thinking about three comps. One workstation, encoding, Photoshop for that kinda stuff, one server for storage and the other obvious reasons and one for in the living room for viewing movies on the tv. I'm still stuck with quite some questions though cause i'm not thta good in computer hardware. Like am i gonna put them brackets in the server or in myworkstation or in both? Also the pricecard attached But it's getting more and more needed.
This is also cool though:

Maxtor always has been poop to me. Owned 3 so far and all 3 died pretty fast.
WD has always been kind to me
Quantum as well, but I think they dont make any drives anymore.

So anyone here uses those brackets for removable internal HDD's? Or just external HDD's?
